About the Inn

Surrounded by pastures and paddocks with white board fencing, the Middleton Inn sits on a knoll facing the Blue Ridge Mountains. In addition to the stables, the estate has several of the original mid-19th century dependencies, including a summer kitchen, a smoke house, and a laborers’ house. The latter has been renovated into the current guest cottage.

The property was originally known as “The Maples”, in deference to its earlier surroundings by maple trees. Its Federal-style house was built around 1840 by Middleton Miller, who designed and manufactured the Confederate uniform during the Civil War. Bricks hand kilned in the property were used for its construction, which also featured metal roofing and meticulously marked wood beams throughout the roof supporting structure. Ownership remained mostly within the various off-shootings of the Miller’s family, until Mary Ann Kuhn, a former Washington Post reporter and producer for CBS TV News, acquired it in 1994 and created the Middleton Inn Bed & Breakfast.

The historic Middleton Inn B&B has received the prestigious Four Diamond AAA rating as well as the highest rating for Bed & Breakfasts from the Mobil Travel Guide, in addition to rave reviews from The Washington Post, Washingtonian Magazine and authors of such publications as Recommended Country Inns, Inn Spots & Special Places, Birnbaum’s Country Inns & Back Roads North America, and James Yenckel’s Great Getaways.

The estate became a sole proprietorship again in 2019. While keeping its private home character, the new ownership has decided to re-open the property’s upper rooms in the main house and the historical cottage for individual guests and/or group-reservation events on selected occasions, mostly during weekends in Spring and Fall.
